I, personally, do not participate in off road triathlons but some of my athletes do and I love receiving their race reports and photos after such events. Rob participated in Xterra Canmore on August 17, 2014. After reading his report and seeing his photos I’m starting to wonder if I should give it a chance sometime. Perhaps next season. Read what Rob had to say about the course below.
“You have to love the Xterra Canmore off road triathlon course! The swim in Quarry lake, the picturesque mountains, the many climbs on the mountainous bike course with steep rocky and root covered descents followed by an undulating trail run across more roots and rocks. Then throw in some rain! It rained in buckets prior to the start which made the trails very slippery. The first lap of the bike course had many people lying on the ground from use of the front brake on the wet roots and rocks. On the upside, the rain provided enough moisture so that the second lap was perfect! The dirt was tacky and provided excellent traction.”
“The challenging run along the trails was fun with the exception of one very steep rock covered downhill that was still very greasy from the rain. This is where gravity tried to get the best of me but I somehow managed to stay upright.
The photographer at the bottom of the slope managed to capture the uncoordinated moment so I could share it with the rest of the world.
The remainder of the race rolled through the forest and I was happy to finish. The finish also closed off my off road triathlon season and has me thinking about next years Xterra races.”
Next up for Rob: Cyclocross! Season starts in the first week of September!
Looking forward to your next post Rob! Congratulations on wrapping up a great triathlon season!
