Wasa Lake Triathlon has always been one of my favorite races. This grassroots race attracts beginners to elites from near and far and offers kids’ races on Saturday and then adult events (Super Sprint, Sprint, Olympic and relays) on Sunday. The Wasa Lake Campground, about 30km north of Cranbrook and east of Kimberly BC serves as a great venue for this weekend event. The Wasa Lake water is usually a “nice” temperature, the rolling hill bike course is interesting and fun and the run course is fast and flat!
Shortly before the sprint race started. Calm, cool and collected!
This early season race (usually the 2nd weekend in June) has been a Club Event for LYNX Triathlon for the last 5 years. Families come out and camp or club members stay in nearby Kimberly and there is much support and camaraderie all weekend long. For those who can stay Sunday night, we always finish off the weekend with a German Feast at The Old Bauernhaus Restaurant in Kimberly BC.
Sometimes swimming is a barrier to triathlon participation but race director Charlie Cooper figured out a solution to this a long time ago. At this race, a solo participant’s swim time can be used as the swim time on a relay team. An individual can compete on their own as well as on a relay by wearing 2 timing chips and handing one off to another teammate. I’ve yet to find any other race where this can be done and it’s great that it makes the event extremely inclusive.
